NELFUND Responds to Concerns Over Student Loan Disbursement Delays


NELFUND continues to engage students at Nigerian tertiary institutions, encouraging them to participate in its loan scheme. NELFUND, the official federal government agency responsible for student loans in Nigeria, has already disbursed over N2.9 billion in loans for tuition fees to more than 27,000 students across 19 higher  education institutions.

    Port Harcourt, Rivers State – Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director (MD) of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), recently acknowledged the challenges related to delays in the disbursement of student loans. Speaking at a student loan sensitization event organized by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Port Harcourt on Thursday, August 22, Sawyerr assured students that efforts are underway to improve the efficiency of the loan disbursement system.

    Despite these obstacles, Sawyerr encouraged students to remain patient and ensure their loan applications are complete and accurate to avoid further delays. He reaffirmed NELFUND’s commitment to transparency and accountability, emphasizing that the agency is dedicated to ensuring every eligible student benefits from the loan scheme. He also called on students to stay engaged and focused on their  educational goals, stressing that the future of Nigeria rests in their hands.

    The sensitization event was part of NELFUND’s efforts to educate undergraduates about the loan scheme and address their concerns directly.

    NELFUND had earlier called on students to fully embrace the student loan scheme. lt describes it as a historic initiative designed to make higher education accessible to all. Sawyerr highlighted the alignment of the scheme with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to education.
